SS-31 Mitochondrial
Overview
SS-31 (also called elamipretide) is a lab-made peptide designed specifically to find and stick to mitochondria, the tiny structures inside your cells that produce energy.
Research Context
SS-31 binds to a fat molecule called cardiolipin, found only in the inner membrane of mitochondria. By stabilizing the folded structure of that membrane, it appears to help mitochondria produce energy more efficiently and reduce damaging byproducts called reactive oxygen species. Research has studied this in animal models of kidney disease and heart-related mitochondrial problems.
