Tirzepatide Metabolic / GLP-1 / GIP

Overview

Tirzepatide is a lab-made peptide that acts on two different hormone receptors your body normally uses to manage blood sugar and appetite: GIP and GLP-1.

Research Context

Both GIP and GLP-1 are natural hormones released after you eat, and both play a role in insulin release and appetite control. Tirzepatide activates both receptors at once, though research shows it actually engages the GIP receptor somewhat more strongly than the GLP-1 receptor. Studies found it improved insulin sensitivity and the function of insulin-producing cells more than medications that only target GLP-1 alone, suggesting the dual-receptor approach adds something beyond either pathway individually.
